What? Once leaving Rome, we head south crossing the Lazio
hinterland, following the same route the ancient Romans themselves took when making their
way to vacation homes. Half way we'll have a beautiful view of the Abbey of Montecassino,
place of prayer and study, which happened to be on the firing line between two armies
during the final stage of World War II.
28 Km (18 miles) north of Naples lies Caserta, the place where the
Bourbon kings of Naples created their Royal Palace as a counterpart to Louis XIV's
Versailles Palace. We are now in sight of Volcano Vesuvius, at the foot of which,
exploiting the fertile soil, some vineyards still produce the Lacryma Christi wine. Once
in Pompeii, we'll start the guided tour of the excavations. This walking tour will unveil
the secrets of both the public and private life of the roman times (we suggest you wear
comfortable shoes).
Lunch, a la carte with drinks included, will be served in a restaurant
accompanied by typical folk music.
In the afternoon, by bus, we'll reach Naples and on foot we'll visit
the historical centre (Piazza del Plebiscito, Royal Palace, Basilica of S.Francesco of
Paola, Saint Charles Theatre, Umberto 1st Gallery and the New Castle) stopping in the most
ancient coffee bar of the city to taste the local coffee.
Leaving Naples, we'll cross the famous district of Santa Lucia with its
beautiful Egg Castle from where we'll enjoy an unforgettable view of the Napolitan Bay.
Driving back the 200 Km (125 miles) along the highway, we'll be back in Rome at 7.00/ 7.30
pm. During the tour we'll visit a cameo factory, ancient craft of the Naples area.
